The Talking Stick loves music!
PLAYING AT THE TALKING STICK: The Talking Stick is a great place to play. It’s a laid back atmosphere that artists and audience both appreciate. We’re all about hearing and hosting the creative expressions of musicians and others, so thanks for your interest in playing here. Here are the answers to some FAQs: Populating a music event is almost 100% dependent on the mailing lists and contacts of the artist - People who bring people are what allow us to stay open and the acts we give priority for return engagements! 1. We close at 10 p.m. Music acts are usually booked in threes - from 7:00-7:50pm, 8:00-8:50 pm, and 9:00 to 9:50pm. This is flexible, but we do close at 10 p.m.! 2. We provide a PA, great house sound, mics and mic stands, most cables, a house drum kit, and house congas. 3. Set up can happen whenever in the hour or so before music is set to start. 4. We usually have one person who doubles as barista and sound person. We typically do a sound check, get the levels and effects tweaked, and then let the sound board alone for most of the night. For special sound needs, the artist can arrange with us in advance or give yourself great joy and less stress by bringing a sound person. 5. We can’t pay artists’ other then our undying admiration and respect. It’s not that you don’t deserve it, we’re just not there yet. 6. Artists are free to set out a tip jar, sell merch, and self promote. 7. If you want to charge a cover you need to make arrangements 7. Some promotion ideas: a) We’ll put up one or two posters if your send them to us and put out flyers. b) We’ll try to play your CD if you send it. c) To get your gig listed in the LA Weekly, "Listings are compiled by mail or fax.
